Survey of attitudes towards home parenteral support in advanced incurable malignancy

We would like to invite you to participate in this international survey promoted by the Home Artificial Nutrition and Chronic Intestinal Failure special interest group of ESPEN (European Society of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition). We aim to collect data on your clinical opinion regarding home parenteral support use for patients with advanced incurable malignancy.

There is a range of clinical practice and opinions towards home parenteral support use in patients with advanced malignancy, which is reflected in the varied prevalence and practices observed across the world. International guidelines, such as the 2016 European Society of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition, continue to provide guidance for clinicians, but consensus on indications and patient selection is yet to be achieved.

Patients with advanced malignancy often have reduced oral intake, with some developing intestinal failure, weight loss and cachexia. These factors are associated with a poor quality of life, reduced response to cancer treatments and worse prognosis. Parenteral support can be used in select cases to try and meet a patient’s nutritional needs and ameliorate some of these factors. The decision to commence a patient with advanced malignancy on home parenteral support has many influencing factors including awareness of treatment, availability of treatment, previous experience, costs and attitudes of clinicians.

We have designed this survey to try and assess the broad range of attitudes of clinicians involved in the care of patients with advanced malignancy.

Thank you in advance for your participation.
